EO/Herb of the
Month:
B A S I L
(Ocimum
basilicum)
Known to
the ancient Greeks as the king of plants, Basil is just
as highly prized today as it was in ancient times.
Though native to Iran and India, this annual herb of the
Lamiaceae family can be found growing wildly on the
hillsides of the sunny Mediterranean. Because of its
habitat, the Basil plant appears in a great variety of
forms. The leaves of a Basil plant can be dark or light
green in color, as well as narrow
or straight in form a nd
when in bloom the purple-white
flowers appear in
clusters.
Prized in Ayurvedic
medicine for its ability to strengthen compassion, faith
and bring clarity, Basil clears the sinuses, promotes
digestion and stimulates circulation, especially in the
respiratory system.

At our recent trade shows, the topic on everyone's lips was the current plastics
scare. Many of our customers asked what packaging
we use and how the problem might affect us.
First of all,
the plastic that is at the heart of the matter is PVC
(Polyvinyl Chloride) and the chemicals that are used to
create it. Of primary concern is
phthalates (pronounced
'tha-,lāt)
which give PVC its pliability or "give".
Phthalates never truly "bind" or bond to the PVC and
have been shown to leach at a rate of 1% per year
according to a 1998 report from the European Union
Scientific Committee. PVC also contains other chemical
compounds such as lead, barium, and cadmium, all of which
can be harmful to your health.
100% of All Things Jill packaging is PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), more commonly referred to as
polyester.
Polyesters are used in a wide variety of products which
we use everyday. Many clothes are made from
it, and it is used as to bottle beverages, such as water
and soft drinks. It also is used for microwave food
trays and food packaging films. Extensive testing in
Canada of PET has determined the material to be safe for
use in the applications for which it has been designed
and tested.
Everyday there
are new reports of dangers and risks that may impact
ourselves and our families. The key is to be a
knowledgeable consumer and aware of what you are
consuming. There are several websites that you can use
to better understand the problem and how to protect you
and your family from it.
