Essential
Oil / Herb of the
Month:
W I N T E R
G R E E N
(Gaultheria
Procumbens)
Wintergreen is a small evergreen herb which grows up to
15cm (6 in) high with slender stems, leathery serrated
leaves, drooping white flowers followed by fleshy
scarlet berries.
Wintergreen and
Sweet Birch oil are both nearly identical in chemical
composition and aroma; similarly, both have been used in
traditional folk and native North American remedies. This tradition has led to the
discovery of Methyl Salicylate, its main ingredient, as
a pain reliever. The salicylates
inhibit the formation of prostaglandins, thereby
reducing inflammation and pain. Along with its analgesic
effects, Wintergreen also has anti-inflammatory,
anti-rheumatic, antitussive, astringent, carminative,
diuretic, and stimulant
properties.
NOTE: Internal use of wintergreen should be
avoided because it can be toxic.
Check out our organic Wintergreen essential oil in our popular Achin' Body Muscle Rub.

Happy
New Year everyone! Over the past couple of months
a LOT has happened here at All Things Jill.
First and foremost, we've moved to a smaller
town, just south of Calgary called Okotoks. Hailed as
the "Greenest
City in Canada", we're very excited to
start 2009 in our new home base.
Email addresses
haven't changed, but our phone numbers have, and new
contact information is at the bottom of this newsletter,
and of course on the website.
Through the
Holiday Season All Things Jill made appearances in Vancouver, Calgary,
Medicine Hat, Swift Current, Lethbridge, Red Deer and
Toronto in November and December. We would like to
extend a warm thank you to all of our customers who came
to see us at the various shows and who placed orders
online.
Now that we've
started a new year, we've been looking at a few new
projects.
Namaste,
Jill

Hypermiling
- Our newest Venture
So what is this Hypermiling thing anyways? It is
a method of increasing your car's gas mileage by making
skillful changes in the way you drive, allowing you to
save gas and thereby have an easier time withstanding
the rising oil and gas prices.
We've taken to
doing it in the city, on long highway drives and have
definitely noticed an increase in gas mileage.
We're now pushing our little All Things Jill Ford Focus
an additional 100km's per tank easily!
Some of the
easiest things you can do to increase your vehicle's
fuel efficiency:
-
Turn your
engine off if you will be idling for more than 10
seconds! We turn off at long intersections, drive
thrus and when we're waiting for one another outside
a shop
-
Coast,
Coast, COAST! Down hills, up to a red light,
anywhere you can. It's easy in a manual transmission
vehicle - simply engage the clutch to move your
vehicle into neutral. During our summer vacation
through the mountains, we added an additional 150kms
to our tank simply by coasting down any hill we came
to.
-
Keep
moving in traffic congestion: don't start & stop all
the time - this consumes fuel. Try coasting slowly
along with the congestion - you may even help to
smooth it out!
-
Don't accelerate quickly off the
mark: You use the most gas when you accelerate. For
example, to get to a certain speed in 3 seconds, it
takes more acceleration (fuel) than it would to
reach that same speed in 4 or maybe even 5 seconds.
