  Ingredient of the Month:

A L O E
(Aloe Barbadensis)

Few plants can claim a 4,000-year history of use for essentially the same purposes, and few are as easy to grow and use as aloe. For countless people, myself included, aloe vera was our first encounter with a medicinal herb. Growing up I can remember receiving a cut or scrape and my mother taking me into the kitchen and cutting a slice off of a thick, spiky plant that always sat on our windowsill. She'd squeeze the jelly-like interior of the plant onto my boo-boo and, for whatever reason (I didn't really care at the time, as long as it felt better!), I healed quickly.

Aloe gel is perhaps the most widely recognized herbal remedy in North America today, used to relieve thermal burn and sunburn, promote wound healing, and moisturize and soften skin. Everyone who uses it seems convinced that it works, and its millennia of use for the same conditions support that assumption.

    Summer Skincare...

With summer somewhere in our near future (although who really knows...it did SNOW here last weekend after all!) it's time to think about taking care of our skin while outdoors.  Last summer we had many customers requesting a product with the same fantastic effects as our very popular Bug Joose! Moisturizing Outdoor Spray, but in a lotion format.

I am very pleased to announce the latest addition to our T∙R∙E∙K family - our new Shoo Fly! Outdoor Lotion (pictured right). With the great benefits of organic essential oils such as Lemongrass, Citronella, Pine and Cedarwood, this lotion glides on skin and absorbs quickly, so that you and your family can get back to your outdoor activities. We suggest you reapply it after swimming and after heavy exercise.

Since it's new this month (and there's a limited supply of it for the summer!) we're offering it at a fantastic low introductory price of only $10. The price will be going up on July 15, so get yours before then!

We've got some great summer gardening tips below that I hope you enjoy, and while the sun's shining today, I think I'll sign off & head out for a rollerblade!

Namaste,
      Jill

Shades of Green
Greener Gardens

Summer has finally arrived (we think!) and it's time to spend more time outdoors. Gardens need weeding, lawns need tending, and blender drinks need, uh, well, drinking.

This is our first summer in our new home and so we've been eager to plant things and see what comes up, but we've been trying to do it in a responsible, environmentally friendly way.

LAWNS:  We've seeded with a low water & low maintenance grass seed (available at your favorite garden store). It grows slower, so requires less cutting, and needs less water both of which are a definite benefit.

FERTILIZERS:  There are a lot of organic fertilizers made from fish, manure and other natural ingredients which can be very effective, so add a little to your lawn in the spring and fall when you seed.

NATURAL HERBICIDES:  White vinegar sprayed on weeds that inevitably pop up will help get rid of them, especially dandelions and Canadian thistle.  Consider planting companion plants together and mixing them up.  Suggestions are: basil with tomatoes, carrots with leaf lettuce, onions or garlic with roses, Swiss chard with beans, and corn with cucumbers. Marigolds planted as a border will discourage both insects and animal pests from stopping for a snack!

We’ll let you know how we do our first summer in our new house. So far, so good! Let us know if you have any secret weapons to keep your garden weed and bug free and we'll send you a discount coupon to be used towards your next online purchase! Send us your feedback at sales@allthingsjill.ca.
