  Essential Oil of the Month:

C I T R O N E L L A

Citronella Oil is extracted from a resilient grass (Cymbopogon nardus) native to Sri Lanka and Java. It is a very aromatic perennial that grows approximately 1 meter (3 feet) in height.

A liquid pale yellow to yellowish brown in colour, Organic Citronella Essential Oil is credited with having therapeutic properties. While most people associate it with its insecticide properties, did you know that it's also great as an antiseptic, deodorant, insecticide, parasitic, tonic and as a stimulant? Many commercial outdoor products contain Citronella, and it is often used in combination with Cedarwood to produce a pleasant smelling outdoor blend. This oil can also help with minor infection, but is more commonly known for its ability to assist in combating colds and flu. Citronella can also be used for excessive perspiration and for conditioning oily skin and hair.

Check out our Take a Hike! Outdoor Joose and Lotion this month as you get ready for summer!

    Hello and Goodbye...

It's been a long time since our last newsletter and we have a lot to share this month and next. First, you'll see above that we've extended our semi-annual sale until June 15. We've had such a great response already we thought it prudent to give our fabulous customers one more week to splurge!

After much back and forth with the Pesticide Management Regulatory Control Agency at Health Canada, you'll notice that we've no longer got our fabulous Bug Joose! and ShooFly! Lotion products on our site. Instead, you'll now find our Take a Hike! Outdoor Joose and Take a Hike! Outdoor Lotion. Same great products, just a new name.

On a much sadder note, we have all had to say goodbye (for now!) to our best furry friend here at ATJ, our beloved Wheaton Terrier Jasper. Inspiring the line of Apawthecary products with his sensitive skin, Jasper headed for the big fire hydrant in the sky on Wednesday after losing his battle with kidney failure. I have included a fantastic thought below which a dear friend and colleague shared with me to help ease my pain of losing him. I share with you in the hopes that it may give you comfort one day in your time of need.

"Imagine a ship sailing out of the harbour toward the horizon. As you watch, it grows smaller and smaller. Soon the ship disappears. "Where did it go?" you ask. You know that it's still out there on the ocean, but you can no longer see it. ThJaspere loss of sight is in us, not in the ship. Just as we lose sight, on the opposite shore, other voices take up the glad shout "Here he comes!"

Stay tuned next month for a Jasper tribute sale. In the meantime, give your furry friends a hello scratch from all of us.

Namaste,
      Jill

Take a Hike!

We've renamed our popular Bug Joose! and ShooFly! Outdoor Lotion. These moisturizing outdoor products start with 35% Aloe Vera juice - a fantastic moisturizer for your skin while outdoors.  Still containing our signature combination of pure essential oils, neither product comes in a pressurized container or contain any chemicals, making it safe for the environment.

Take a Hike! Outdoor Joose and Outdoor Lotion are pure and non-greasy so it won't leave your skin feeling sticky, and can be safely reapplied as needed.

Found in our popular TREK line of products, these are two you'll definitely want to add to your summer beach and hiking bag!

Chinook Honey

Whenever I'm looking for a little something sweet to add to tea, coffee, dinner or desserts, I always open up the cupboard to reveal the best honey around. The Chinook Honey Company is located in Okotoks, Alberta.

All of their honey is non-pasteurized, meaning, it comes straight from the bees to you, the consumer. No extra processing, no extra handling. The result? A superior quality honey, both in taste and in medicinal benefits

Stop into their little operation to pick up some sweet treats (including a divine Raspberry Mead and honey ice cream) and have a look at their observation hive. You won't be disappointed.

10 Ways to Green Your Home

Taken from this month's CAA Magazine (where you'll find a product of ours on page 22!), check out the following for some great, easy ways to green your home a little.

1) Use weather stripping to seal gaps around windows and doors.

2) Replace some of your incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs)

3) Plug all appliances such as TVs and computers into a surge-protected power bar

4) One drip of water per minute from a leaky faucet is equal to half a litre of water going down the drain every day.

5) If you have a high-capacity toilet, fill a four-litre plastic bottle with water and place it in the toilet tank to save more than 10,000 litres per year from being flushed down the drain.

6) Use reversible ceiling fans in the winter to distribute heat evenly and in the summer to supplement your air conditioner.

7) Clean or replace your furnace air filter every three months

8) Save energy by installing dimmer switches for lights inside and outside your home

9) Plant a shade tree on the southeast or southwest side of your house

10) Invest in summer and winter curtains
